On Jan. 31, 2012, the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station announced an emergency shutdown because of the detection of radiation leaking from the newly replaced steam generators in Unit 3. What was thought to be a minor incident could lead to the permanent closure of this troubled nuclear power plant.
